Today were are going to go a little more technical. Would you like to have your own web server running on Linux in Google Cloud Platform (GCP) for FREE?
Yes this is possible! GCP has a free tier that allows to run a single server (1 CPU, 1GB RAM, 30GB storage and static public IP address) for free! Google states “There is no charge to use these products up to their specified free usage limit. The free usage limit does not expire, but is subject to change.”
So make the most of this offer!
Note that Google will ask for your credit card details to verify identity but there won’t be any charge. You also get $300 of free credits to try out other GCP products.
To make things easier for you, I have made four videos that describe all the steps involved.
Make sure to turn subtitles on as there are a couple of steps that I forgot to mention in the videos and I’ve added them in the subtitles and in the description. Forgive the accidental blur at the beginning of Part 1 as I managed to blur myself with the YouTube Editor🤦🏻♂️
For good measure, I have added how to install WordPress in Part 3 so you can have a beautiful website up and running in minutes!
Part 4 shows you how to secure your web server to keep the hackers away.
Note: if you want to access your server by name (and install the SSL certificates for secure traffic), you will need a domain name. You can have cheap personal ones (yourname.id.au) starting at A$20 per year at Webcentral.
Enjoy! Feel free to let me know what you think.
